If you want to reduce, reuse and recycle, finding home accents at a thrift or antique store is always a good idea! I've found fantastic vintage kitchen items there like cups and bowls, and I've also found lots of lovely brass accessories like candlesticks, glassware and wall decor that I can use as-is. It's so nice when the current home trend matches up with what you can find thrifting! Keep your eye out for mirrors, wall art, furniture and textiles like fabric that you can update to suit your home. Paint can do wonders to make thrifted decorative accents look brand new. You can also check out second hand marketplaces online for local sellers that want to get rid of their old decor.

The dollar store is another unexpected place to find nice home decor items. Like the thrift store, you can use paint, glue and other DIY methods to make the items look more high-end. Look for things like kitchen accessories, baskets, vases, candlesticks, picture frames and faux florals. You can often duplicate looks found at places like Bed Bath & Beyond and H&M Home this way for far less!

Not only does The Home Depot have building supplies in-store for your DIY projects, but they also have some great home decor pieces as an online retailer. One of my favourite things to buy there (online) are area rugs. They are cheap and there's a lot of selection and many trendy and classic options for shoppers who don't mind taking the time to look through them all. You can also look for outdoor furniture & decor, indoor plants, planters, lamps and light fixtures.

You never know what gems you'll find at HomeSense or HomeGoods! This is a great place to find finishing touches for your room like area rugs, accessories, lighting, wall art, mirrors, and textiles. They also have a ton of seasonal decor for Christmas, spring and fall. I find HomeSense to be like a thrift shop in that you might get lucky, or you might not. Stalk your closest store every week or two to find the best treasures!

Wayfair online has been a great source for cheap decor items for my room makeovers. They'll often have an item that I can't find elsewhere, like this sturdy bunkbed for our vacation rental cottage. I've also found brand name area rugs there like a new Amber Lewis X Loloi rug for our living room, and some nice small furnishings like benches and accent chairs.

If you're looking for budget-friendly home decor or home organization, IKEA is always a popular shopping destination. They also have items that are great for small spaces, and most things have a clean, modern aesthetic. At IKEA, look for things like coffee tables, side tables, jars, vases, baskets, wall art, home organization items, kitchen accessories, dishes, and textiles. I love their curtains, duvets, bedding, and pillow inserts the best. We also have lots of furniture from there like bed frames and our dining table and sideboards. These items have lasted many years.

Over the last few years, mega retailer Walmart has truly upped their game when it comes to home decor. They have lots of pieces that have a high-end look, but at low prices. At Walmart, look for home accessories like textiles, throw pillows, area rugs, wall art, mirrors, towels and baskets.

Etsy is a wonderful place to shop for cheap home decor, and you'll be supporting an artisan as an extra bonus! I love online shopping on Etsy for free printable artwork, faux and dried florals, and amazing textiles like throw pillow covers. You can also look for other handmade, beautiful home decor items with unique textures like mugs, vases, candles and throw blankets.

You can buy all the furniture, home decor and accessories you want, but if you don't know how to put them together it will be difficult to make your home look high-end. Never fear! We spent more than 60 hours researching hundreds of area rugs, interviewing experts, and testing rugs with panelists. Then we put our feet on our favorites at home (and let a cat do his best to destroy them) for many more hours.

The original author of this guide was Shannon Palus. Her first place out of college was a two-bedroom in South Philadelphia, with all linoleum floors. Shannon and her roommate scrambled to make the place look okay with as little money as possible. She spent those two years putting her feet on a lot of cheap rugs. Some were better than others, to put it kindly.

We sifted through hundreds of rugs on discount home-decorating sites like Wayfair and Overstock, as well as on Amazon. We checked out the offerings from retailers such as Crate and Barrel, Pier 1 Imports, Target, Walmart, and West Elm, too. Yet per the advice of second-generation rug cleaner Lisa Wagner, we remained skeptical of the price of rugs from big-box stores, because such rugs are often made of the same materials as much cheaper counterparts on discount sites.

After researching dozens of rug pads, interviewing rug cleaners and manufacturers, and testing 15 models, we found that the -inch-thick Mohawk Home Dual Surface Felted Rug Pad had the best combination of cushioning and nonslip grip. We also like the Durahold Plus Non Slip Rug Pad for a bit more grip, and the Rug Pad USA Super Lock Natural for more versatile placement. Our full guide to rug pads has more information on choosing a rug pad, and how we tested them. 59ce067264
