P. Ramlee's Life and Career
P. Ramlee was born as Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh on 22 March 1929 in Penang, Malaysia. He was a descendant of a wealthy family from Aceh, Indonesia, and his father was a sailor. He showed an early interest in music and singing, and won several contests organised by Penang Radio. He also attended various schools, including the Japanese navy school during the Japanese occupation of Malaya.
In 1948, he moved to Singapore to work for Shaw Brothers studio as a singer and actor. He made his film debut in Cinta (1948) as a villain, and soon became a popular leading man in Malay films. He also composed songs for many of his films, and collaborated with other singers such as Saloma, who later became his wife. He also ventured into directing and writing films, and created some of the most memorable characters and stories in Malay cinema. Some of his best-known films include Bujang Lapok (1957), Pendekar Bujang Lapok (1959), Nujum Pak Belalang (1959), Tiga Abdul (1964), and Ibu Mertuaku (1962).
In 1964, he moved to Kuala Lumpur to work for Merdeka Studio, where he continued to make films until his death.
